What tradition did I learn about?:

I learned about Vienna's Christmas Markets! From early November all the way until the end of December, Vienna’s most popular squares take on a new life as Christmas markets start popping up. A yearly holiday tradition, the Christmas markets are open every day, from 10:00 am until 9:00 pm, making sure to bring some holiday cheer to our COVID-interrupted lives. With about 20 Christmas markets scattered all over the city, Vienna knows how to get in the festive spirit.

Why does the community have this tradition?:

Vienna has this tradition because the city has a rich history of Catholicism. The Christmas markets fail to take into account the many other religious traditions and cultural heritages celebrated in Austria, such as Judaism. Vienna has a dark history of grossly mistreating Jews during World War II, but nowadays, Austria does a good job at acknowledging their past mistakes, as well as taking responsibility for contributing to the subjugation of Jews. That being said, Christmas markets overwhelmingly dominate all the other holidays during the wintertime. The markets aren't exclusionary though, they are welcome and open to all (as long as you are vaccinated).

Is this tradition connected to its environment? How?:

I haven't noticed the ways in which the Christmas markets are connected to the environment.
