I didn't pet them, but they looked very soft.
I was so excited to see sheep, especially lambs, in the wild! I think they're so cute. It was especially cool to see sheep and goats being herded by a shepherd— we don't see that every day in the United States.
Sheep are common in mountainous areas in India, particularly where there are big, sprawling meadows. Sheep are common here because they can easily live in cold weather and eat the grass that grows there. Farmers keep sheep for their wool, which is used to make warm clothes.
Sheep use their environment in several ways to survive. They graze on grass, shrubs and other plants for food, which provides them with the energy they need to stay healthy. Streams, rivers and puddles give them water to drink. Their thick wool acts like a coat, helping them stay warm in cold or windy weather, especially in mountains or high-altitude areas. Sheep also use rocky or sheltered spots to protect themselves from harsh weather like rain or snow. By adapting to their surroundings, they can live comfortably even in tough environments.
Sheep can be harmed by predators like wolves or leopards (or the five other big cats in India!), extreme weather such as heavy snow or heat, and diseases that affect their health. They can also struggle if there isn’t enough food or clean water in their environment. Overgrazing, caused by too many sheep in one area, can destroy the grass and plants they depend on, leading to hunger.
