Growing Up in Germany

In 6th grade, they have the option to pick a second foreign language, like French or Spanish.

What are some common kids' names at your school?:

At the school where Mrs. Wulf teaches, many of her students come from Turkish backgrounds, so a common name is Mohammad. Among families of German descent, common boys' names are Lucas and Maximilian/Max, and common girls' names are Anna, Lara, and Lea.

What is your homework like?:

They don't usually have homework! They have a "work plan" that lists things they have to do each week, but they get time to finish their work during the school day. Their only occasional piece of homework is learning new English words.

What do you like to do after school? Do you have a favorite sport or game?:

Rala does gymnastics and plays piano. Tammo is on a soccer team and is learning how to play cello.

What would you like to be when you grow up?:

Tammo wants to work with animals, and Rala wants to be an astronaut.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?:

Rala just started learning Spanish, so she wants to visit Spain! Tammo wants to go to a warm country like Italy or Thailand (which is understandable because German winters can be freezing!).

What questions do you have for kids in the United States?:

Rala: What time does school start there? How do you like that time?
