Five months ago, I started my crazy journey of teaching English in Bulgaria. I had no idea what was ahead: the brilliant students I would get to teach, the opportunities I would have to travel around Europe or the beautiful Bulgarian culture I would come to love. I think this is what makes for the best adventures, when you step outside of your comfort zone into the unknown with an open mind.
When I first got here, it took me hours to get groceries as I slowly read all the labels and tried to find the ingredients I needed. I could barely say здравейте (zdraveyte, meaning hello) to my neighbors. I was intimidated by the high schoolers and thought I would never learn all 385 of their names.
I am truly so proud of all that I have learned in the past five months. I can now navigate stores with ease, have small conversations in Bulgarian, have a fun time teaching my high school students and I even made friends along the way. Of course I had challenges and made many mistakes, but that is the only way to learn and grow!
