A Look Into the Life of a Bulgarian Fourth Grader

Introduction:

One day a colleague of mine brought in some treats to share with the English teaching department, which is often done to celebrate something like a birthday or a name day. Name days align with the Eastern Orthodox calendar, which has days that honor certain saints. On that day everyone with the same or similar name get to celebrate. For example, January 7th was honoring St. John the Baptist, so everyone with a name similar to John (Yoan, Yoanna, Ivan, Ivana, Zhana, Ivo, Iva, etc.) was celebrated.

When I asked my colleague what the treats were celebrating, she replied that her daughter had done very well at a dance competition! I asked to interview her daughter, Riana, and learn more about what the life of a fourth grader is like in Bulgaria.
