Australia is a melting pot of foods and flavors from all over the world. In 1788, men and women from Great Britain migrated to Australia and brought their food traditions with them. Because of this, Australian food is quite similar to British food. Fries are called “chips,” and dessert is part of nearly every meal. For example, crepes, a type of flat pancake that first came from France, are a very popular dessert in Australia and are usually layered with chocolate sauce and fresh fruit. Over the years, however, Australia has developed its own unique foods that you will not find anywhere else in the world.
Tim Tams, Vegemite and a Bunnings’ snag. Have you heard of any of these before? I hadn’t either until I came to Australia. Tim Tams are a chocolate biscuit, which is the Australian word for cookie. They are absolutely delicious and remind me of cookies covered in Nutella. Vegemite, however, is not my favorite snack. It is a brown paste made from beans that tastes very salty, and Australians love to spread it on toast. My favorite Australian snack might be a Bunnings’ snag. This snack, found only in Australia, is a hot dog served on a slice of white bread and topped with ketchup.
