Eastern Europe is not really known for its cuisine, but there are a few signature dishes in the Czech Republic that are worth ordering at least once. During my first week in Prague, I tried svíčková, a dish consisting of meat atop cranberry sauce with dumplings (bread balls) on the side and whipped cream. It was definitely much sweeter than I think I prefer meat to be, but it still tasted good nonetheless. Since then, I’ve tried a couple of other traditional dishes, including beef goulash, a meat dish served with vegetables and slices of bread that was pretty similar to the svíčková. I’ve also tried something called smažený sýr, which is a giant fried cunk of cheese served with French fries. It was yummy but incredibly filling and definitely too big to finish on my own. I think if the dish were mozzarella-stick-sized, my rating would be a little higher. Still, smažený sýr is considered a kid’s meal in the Czech Republic, so it’s popular in local restaurants.

Funny enough, though, the best food I’ve had in Prague has not been European at all! Prague has a huge Vietnamese population, so it’s common to find a Vietnamese restaurant every few blocks or so. And, I must say, their cuisine is absolutely delicious.
