Hello! My name is Semaj Young and I'm from New Orleans, Louisiana. Growing up in New Orleans made me become invested in the environment. This is because I have lived through two of the most dangerous and damaging hurricanes ever to hit the state of Louisiana. Living in a city that is threatened by the impacts of climate change influenced me to go to college for the environment. I'm a junior at Illinois Wesleyan University double majoring in Environmental Studies and Theatre Arts.
Currently, I am studying at the School for International Training in their "Iceland: Climate Change and the Arctic" program. While studying in Iceland I am grateful to be receiving support from the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program. I can't wait to share this journey as I try new foods and learn about Iceland's traditions and culture. I’m most excited to see the natural wonders of Iceland like glaciers, hot springs, and especially the northern lights!
