Setswana Food and Culture: A Textural Experience

Introduction:

For reference, Setswana is the term used for anything traditional or cultural in Botswana. It is also the name of the national language.

Cow, goat and chicken intestine, cow tongue feet, and Mopane worms--these are just a few of the new things I have tried since arriving in Botswana.

What food did I try?:

I tried the above foods and cannot say I liked many of them.  I did like cow tongue and eat it nearly every week when the restaurant near me serves it.  It is made into a thick soup and has some vegetables and spice that make it delicious.

Donkey is also eaten although I have not tried it yet.  I understand it is rubbery.  You will understand as you read the below question.

How did I feel when I tried it?:

The intestines (serobe) were horribly rubbery and took a great amount of chewing to get down. The flavour was okay but the texture was terrible.  I got a lot of laughs from local people as I chewed it and showed a face of displeasure.  Mopane worms were quite salty, as I think it is the way to preserve it.  These can be farmed and are sold in bags with hundreds of worms.  They are the texture of a drier beef jerky.  I did not find them very pleasurable.
