The best meal I had this week was a traditional pumpkin soup made by my host family! It was warm, delicious, and perfect for the cooler fall weather. Something I have noticed since coming to Germany is that people often cook with the ingredients that are in season. Since it is autumn, pumpkins are very popular right now. I've seen lots of pumpkin-flavored foods and treats over the last few weeks. It's a fun way to experience the season through food and learn about what people enjoy eating here.
While in Germany, I have noticed that a lot of American music gets played around me. I wasn't expecting this when I arrived in Mainz. I thought maybe they would have their own kind of music that gets played day to day, but it has mostly been American artists in all sorts of genres. I have enjoyed listening to some classical music, which feels fitting while exploring a country with so much art, history, and beautiful old architecture. Whether I am walking around the city or traveling by train, music has been a fun way to enjoy the experience.
My favorite activity this week was participating in Welcome Week for the international students at my university! It was such a great experience because I got to meet other students who are from other countries who are also studying abroad. It was exciting to hear everyone's stories, learn where they came from, and share experiences of living in a new country. Studying abroad can feel overwhelming sometimes, so meeting other students who are going through similar experiences made me feel more connected and at home in Mainz.
