Niños en Costa Rica - Kids in Costa Rica

What jobs do your parents have?:

My dad works as a manager for a university in town and is in charge of a lot of things there. My mom takes classes, helps care for my other grandma and cares for the house.

What time does school start, and what time do you go home?:

I wake up at 5:00 a.m., get ready by 6:00 a.m. and get to school before it starts at 7:00 a.m. For the first to sixth grades, we have one teacher in one classroom for about 25 students. I am going into fourth grade this year and start school in just a few days. My teacher is very funny and loves to tell jokes. During the day, we have class, recess and lunch before going home at 1:00 p.m.

How do you get to school? Are you allowed to go to school by yourself?:

I usually walk with my brother to school or sometimes my mom will give me a ride.

Where do you eat lunch? What is your favorite food?:

All my classmates and I eat lunch at school in the cafeteria. Lunch is free for everyone, and we have one chef that cooks for us. My favorite food is rice with a fried egg. I could eat it every day!

What language do you speak at school? How do you say "Hello" in your language?:

At school, I speak Spanish. To say hello, I say "Hola!" I know a little bit of English that my dad has taught me, but not too much yet. I'll start taking English classes when I enter high school in seventh grade.

What are some common kids' names at your school?:

Some common names at my school are Mattias, Carmen, Carlos, Jose, Roberto, Ana, Juan and Juana, along with many more!
