Slow and Steady Wins the Race: Sloths in Costa Rica

Where does it live?:

Sloths are mostly found in the rainforests of Central and South America in countries like Panama, Brazil, Ecuador and Costa Rica! Sloths live high in trees and spend most of their time hanging upside down from tree branches! They do almost everything upside down like sleep, eat, mate and even give birth.

How does it use its environment to survive?:

It is believed that sloths move so slowly to avoid the glance of predators or other animals that harm them. Because sloths move so slowly, they can be more difficult to spot. Also, they spend most of their time in trees, which makes them harder to attack. They come down from their spot high in the trees only about once a week to use the bathroom.

What can harm this creature or plant? Are we worried about it?:

Predators of sloths include jaguars, snakes and wild cats. Although the sloths in Costa Rica are not endangered, sloths in other countries such as Brazil and Panama are endangered which means there aren't many sloths left in those other countries. Because of this, it's important to take care of our sloth friends and the trees that they live in.
