My First Bites of Asturias

Introduction:

In my first month living in Spain, I have been lucky enough to try many new Spanish foods. Some foods are native to my home region of Asturias, in the northwest part of the country. Other foods are enjoyed throughout the country.

What food did I try?:

For breakfast, I have tried multiple varieties of pan con tomate (bread with tomato), which is a toasted slice of delicious bread topped with olive oil, freshly grated tomato and salt.

I also tried a few different tapas, or small plates that are similar to appetizers. One surprising tapa I tried was the gilda de matrimonio, which is a small skewer with olives, peppers, and anchovies.

Throughout my time here, I’ve also sampled lots of pastries! In a nearby mountain town, I tried traditional apple muffins that were filled with apples and cinnamon, kind of like a classic American apple pie.

To round out my mini-food tour, I sampled a dish that is native to Asturias, the region where I live. It’s called fabada, and is a hearty, white-bean stew. I also found a delicious slice of tortilla de patatas, a dish served throughout Spain that is similar to a tender omelet with potatoes and onions.
