Patagonian Glaciers

In November 2017, in fact, an unexpectedly large iceberg broke off of Grey Glacier, and ruptures such as these are growing more frequent (Reuters). Every year Grey Glacier creeps downward at an increasing rate. That same year, 18 people were killed in Villa Santa Lucia, Chile, by a landslide as a result of glaciers melting further up the mountain (Chile Today).

People should be concerned about the disappearance of glaciers for two main reasons. The first one I mentioned before: people depend on glaciers for water and for growing their food! Second, as glaciers melt, water flows into the oceans, causing sea levels to rise. Sea level rise has massive negative implications for human civilizations.
