Summer in Córdoba lasts from approximately May to October, and during these months, it stays light here until around 10pm. It’s also so hot in the afternoon (which in Andalucía lasts until 7pm) that people stay home until the evening, at which point they are ready to get out of the house and go see their friends.
But what does "living in the street" really mean? Where are people actually spending their time? This question has led me to...parks! Córdoba is full of parks, and the parks are full of people (and dogs!). It’s common here to see parents playing with their young children at the playground until 10pm, elderly couples strolling or having a chat on a bench, dogs running off leash, people in their 20s-30s taking a break from hauling their luggage around the city and teenagers hanging out with their friends. With the concentration of shade from big trees and the way that grass and soil (as opposed to asphalt) absorb the heat, parks are one way that Cordobés people vivir en la calle, or take advantage of long summer days, spend time in community with one another and beat the heat.
