Travel News

How far did I travel this week?:

This week I stayed close to home, as I prepare for my upcoming adventure, and also being mindful fo the rain and water on the roads. The rains have created some rough patches as the water weakens the sandy foundation.

How far have I traveled on this journey so far?:

I traveled from Durham, North Carolina, where I lived before joining Peace Corps, to Washington, DC, (258 miles), where I met up with the other people in my program. Then I traveled to Botswana (7,955 miles) and then to Kazungula, where I live now (579 miles) for a total of 8,792 miles. I am a long way from home, but with the internet and cell phones, family and friends are just a phone call away. I can also have video chats, like we did, too!

How did I get around this week?:

In Kazungula, you can catch local taxis on the road in front of your house. For 8 pula, or 60 cents, I can travel to most of the places I need to go, such as the grocery store or the library. The taxis are small cars for four passengers and can be identified by the blue license plates. When I need to travel farther I could catch a combi, which is a 16 paggenger van and the cost depends on the distance traveled. To get to the larger cities, such as Francistown or Gaborone, I need to ride a bus and it takes many hours.
