In summer, when the days are long and bright, people take fika outside to enjoy the light and fresh air. The setting changes with the seasons, but the spirit of fika remains the same.
Compared to the United States, the difference is clear. Coffee often feels rushed, something you grab on the way to the next thing. In Sweden, it is more intentional, almost like a set part of the day. Since living in Stockholm, I have started to adopt that mindset. At first, it felt unusual to pause in the middle of the day, but over time it has changed how I think about time. Slowing down, even briefly, can make the day feel fuller rather than less productive. I hope to carry that perspective with me when I return to the United States, remembering that it is just as important to slow down as it is to keep moving.
