One of the very best ways to experience a place is to try its local foods. Everyone has to eat, and mealtime in Greece is a time to slow down, enjoy a good meal with family and friends, and tap into a culinary (food-based) tradition that has been developed and refined over the course of thousands of years. Many of the foods I have seen in local markets and on restaurant menus were also eaten and enjoyed by the people who lived long ago in the archeological sites that we explore during the day. This includes seafood (fish, ocotpus, squid), olives, pomegranates, lamb, and fresh dairy products like cheese. Many dishes are flavored with fresh herbs (dill, rorsemary, thyme, oregano) that lead to simple dishes with rich and complex flavors. Plus, most of what I've observed people eating here is considered quite healthy, part of a Meditteranean diet that helps people (on average) live longer than places where people eat a lot of fried or processed foods. Let's take a look at a few of the things I've tasted.
I've tried everything Greek that I can get my fork on, but I'm going to focus on three foods/drinks: Greek salad, pomegranates, and fresh fish. Greek salads are a comon menu item in restaurants both on mainland Greece (Athens) and on the islands we've visited so far.
