There aren’t too many animals in the DR. Next to my apartment is a chicken coop so every morning I wake up to the sounds of the gallinas. There are also many street dogs and cats. Other than that, the majority of animals I see on a regular basis are insects like mosquitos, ants, and cockroaches (unfortunately).
No hay tantos animales que viven en la RD. Al lado de mi apartamento hay un gallero, así que cada mañana me levanto a los sonidos de las gallinas. En las calles hay un montón de perros y gatos. Además de eso, la mayoría de los animales que veo regularmente son insectos como mosquitos, hormigas y cucarachas (desafortunadamente).
This week I had the opportunity to go whale watching. Samana Bay, one of the pueblos on the north side of the island, is known for its humpback whales. During winter, from January to March, these whales migrate to the coast of the DR to find warm water. During whale watching season, there are at least 300 whales in the bay and they are heavily protected by the Dominican government.
Esta semana, tuve la oportunidad de ir a observar las ballenas. La Bahía de Samaná, uno de los pueblos del norte de la isla, se conoce por sus ballenas jorobadas. Durante el invierno, desde enero hasta marzo, estas ballenas migran a la costa de la República Dominicana para encontrar agua más caliente. Durante la temporada de avistamiento de las ballenas hay más de trescientas ballenas en la bahía y están fuertemente protegidas por el gobierno.
