There are two main languages spoken on the island. The most prominent is Spanish. This is the language that is taught in schools around the DR and used most frequently. The other language is Haitian Creole. The DR shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti. Many people immigrate from Haiti to the DR. I am located in a community not far from the Haitian border and for that reason, there are many people in my community that speak Haitian Creole.
Hay dos idiomas que se hablan en la isla. El más común es español. Ese idioma es el que se enseña en las escuelas alrededor de la RD y es el más común. El otro idioma es el creol haitiano. La RD comparte la isla de Hispaniola con el país de Haití. Hay muchas personas que han emigrado desde Haití hasta la RD. Yo vivo en una comunidad cerca de la frontera con Haití y, por eso, hay muchas personas en mi comunidad que hablan creol.
The currency in the DR is Dominican pesos. $1 U.S. is about 62 pesos. For example, for a week's worth of vegetables, I tend to pay 500 pesos total between my roommate and I. This would be about $8.13. There are both coins and bills in pesos. The coins start at 5 pesos and go up to 25. The common bills are 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000, and 2000.
