Carnaval in the Dominican Republic is one of the oldest celebrated traditions in the Americas. It started in the 15th century when Spanish colonizers brought this fiesta to the Caribbean. Since then, it has been morphed into a celebration with influences from a variety of cultures including African, European, and Taíno (the indigenous tribes and first inhabitants of Hispaniola). There is a month-long celebration starting in the month of February ending typically on the 27th, the country's national day of Independence. The fiestas are full of colorful costumes, elaborate masks, parades and music.
