One of the most popular dishes that is eaten all across the island is “La Bandera” which directly translates to “the flag.” It consists of rice, beans, meat and a side salad. The idea is that each main item of the dish represents a color. The white rice represents the cross, the red beans represent the red in the flag, and the blue is meant to be the meat. This is one of the most common daily lunch dishes and it is engrained in the culture here which is why it is also named after the flag. Along with the typical beans, meat, and rice, víveres (root vegetables) are also very popular. Some root vegetables you may be familiar with are potato, sweet potato, and platano. Some other víveres that are more specific to the Dominican Republic are yuca, ñame, auyama, and rulo. However, the most popular root vegetable is plantain.
