Teacher's Day: A Celebration of Learning

Introduction:

Argentina has a holiday called Teacher’s Day. Let's explore together what Teacher’s Day is, why people celebrate it and how it connects to the world around us.

What tradition did I learn about?:

I learned about a tradition in Argentina called Día del Maestro (Teacher's Day). It is celebrated every year on September 11th. On this day, students have a special day at school because the holiday is meant to honor and thank their teachers. Teacher’s Day is very important in Argentina because it provides a chance to show respect for all the hard work that teachers do to help children learn. Sometimes students give cards, flowers or small gifts to teachers, and some schools have ceremonies that day. My school held a very large celebration in its courtyard that was an hour long and honored the history of the holiday. It is kind of like Teacher Appreciation Week in the United States, but in Argentina it is an entire national holiday.

Why does the community have this tradition?:

Teacher’s Day was created because of a man named Domingo Faustino Sarmiento. He lived a long time ago (1811-1888) and is remembered as the “Father of the Classroom” in Argentina. Sarmiento thought education was very important for everyone, not just rich people, and he wanted every child to have the chance to go to school.
