If you ask me, spring is the tastiest time of the year here in Lesotho. That is because it is peach season! In Sesotho, we call peaches liperekisi. Another yummy snack that I cannot get enough of is makoenya, also known as “fat cakes”.
When I go into town to buy groceries, I often buy freshly picked peaches. People sell them on the side of the road in big buckets for five rand which is about 31 cents in U.S. currency. Buying peaches from street vendors is better than buying them at grocery stores because they are fresher and cheaper.
My favorite snack to buy in town is makoenya. Makoenya are very affordable and usually cost two rand or about 12 cents in U.S. currency. People sell them in small shops, or they carry them in large buckets on their heads as they walk around town.
I felt happy and refreshed when I took a bite of the juicy, fuzzy peach. After I finished eating it, my hands were sticky. Eating makoenya makes me feel warm because it comes fresh from the fryer. After eating it, my hands feel greasy and oily.
