The Mountain Kingdom in the Sky

Introduction:

Where a person lives influences their life. The land and weather of a place can either make life easier or harder. People must be able to adapt to the challenges in their environment.

For example, the land and weather play a big role in helping my students get water, grow crops and easily travel around their village. However, certain conditions of the local environment can make these activities challenging.

What makes this environment special or different?:

Lesotho is the highest country in the world. We call this place the “Mountain Kingdom in the Sky” because the country is 3,281 feet high above sea level. Lesotho has four types of natural areas: mountainous highlands, foothills, low-lying Western Lowlands and the Senqu River Valley.

Lesotho is the coldest country in Africa because of its elevation. It snows in Lesotho between May and September.

Lesotho has four seasons: winter, spring, summer and autumn. In the winter, snow often falls in the highlands and sometimes even in the lowlands. In the spring, new plants begin to grow everywhere. Summer is the rainy season, with heavy rain that can turn dirt roads into mudslides. Autumn is a calmer season with little rainfall and warm weather.
