Introduction: My diet has changed quite a bit since coming to the Dominican Republic. Now that I live on my own and not with a host family, I can eat more Americanized food with the ingredients I have access to, but when I lived with my first host family, I was eating authentic Dominican food all day every day. This is what a typical day of eating looked like:
Breakfast, 7:00 am
In my opinion, breakfast is more like an American lunch… a sandwich, maybe some salami, maybe some cheese, maybe an empanada…This is what I would have:
- Cafecito (coffee)- Small cup of espresso with lots of sugar, no milk. I prefer bigger cups of coffee with no sugar and a little milk, but that’s not how they do it in the DR, so I acclimated
- Pan (bread)- I would either get a tostada, which is essentially a grilled cheese, or a piece of plain bread
- Fruta (fruit)- The fruit in the DR is the best I’ve ever had. Pineapple, mango, watermelon, oranges, bananas, passion fruit, and papaya are most common here. I could eat unlimited amounts of fruit… except for papaya. Yuck! It’s one of the few foods in the country I’ve tried and disliked
