Living with Nature in Northern Peru

Today, people also collect rainwater to use for drinking, cooking, and washing. Most people tend to their fields during the day, and to do this, they rely on animals such as horses and donkeys to help transport their equipment and goods back to town. People here raise vacas y toros (cows and bulls) and plant frejoles (beans), maíz (corn), zapallos (squash) and other vegetables to sell in the city market a couple hours away. The environment here allows people to farm for most of the year, and people have adapted their farming practices to maintain their livelihoods through agriculture.
