From Traditional to Modern Korean Food

Since it’s very cold in Korea at this time of the year, I tried warm soups like tofu noodle spicy soup, dumpling and tofu soup and ramen. At school, I had a buckwheat noodle salad that was cool and refreshing.

Modern and international food:

Because Seoul is a big and diverse city, it has foods from many different countries! I tried things like pizza with Korean-style vegetables and vegan cheese, pasta, gnocchi, risotto and sandwiches. I also had different bowls with vegetables and sauces.

Cafe foods and desserts:

South Korea is famous for having tons of cafes. There are 24,000 in Seoul alone! I tried matcha drinks with soy milk (which is said to be the best milk to pair with matcha), strawberry lattes, matcha tiramisu, soy ice cream, cheesecake, bagels and many different pastries.

Convenience store snacks:

Convenience stores (편의점 in Korean) are places where you can grab a quick meal, snacks and drinks from. Here, I saw a fun drink where you buy a cup of ice and pour a flavored drink of your choice into it yourself!

How did I feel when I tried it?:

Trying these different foods has made me feel very excited because everything is so colorful and new to me. It has also made me feel very safe because as a vegan (someone who doesn’t consume anything from animals), I thought there wouldn’t be many things for me to eat here. As you can see in the pictures, Seoul has so many places for people who eat different things. Some foods were warm and comforting, like the soup and ramen. Some surprised me because of how spicy they were, like the tteokbokki!
