Travel News

How far did I travel this week?:

I didn't travel outside of Salvador this week. I took some long walks throughout the city, which is about 270 square miles (Wikipedia). There are a lot of neighborhoods within Salvador that all have different architecture and vibes, so I love to explore them and find new places I haven't been to before.

How far have I traveled on this journey so far?:

From where I live in Michigan to Salvador, Brasil is about 4,800 miles. But I first went to São Paulo when I arrived in Brasil for my Fulbright orientation. I loved São Paulo, especially because the climate is more similar to Michigan. I am excited to go back there to spend the holidays with the family of a friend I met here in Salvador!

How did I get around this week?:

I get around almost exclusively on foot, although sometimes I take an Uber or taxi if a place is too far to walk. Ubers here are much cheaper than they are in the U.S. I typicall pay $1.50 for a one to three mile ride, and a ride to the airport (which is about a 30-40 minute drive) is only $7-8 USD.

What was the most interesting place I visited this week?:

I visited a beautiful art museum called Museu de Arte Contemporânea da Bahia (Museum of Contemporary Art of Bahia), which has an amazing exhibit right now that touches on African tradition, memory, ancestry, colors and love.
