From Helsinki to Rovaniemi, it takes about nine hours by train because Lapland is so far north. The total in mileage was 504 miles.
I stayed in Rovaniemi for exactly four days but stayed in the Lapland region during my school visit. So, traveling from Helsinki Rovaniemiimi and back to Helsinki was a total of 1008 miles.
I used my cross-country skis to get to the grocery store and back to my apartment, I was staying at. However, to walk to the Sami school, I traveled on foot and wore very thick, warm winter snowshoes and ski pants!
I really enjoyed being in a second grade Sami classroom! I would love for you to meet some of these amazing students your age! They love second grade just like you, but they are learning more about their own culture and language. They really enjoy the outdoors and taught me how to dress warmly and enjoy being in the cold and experiencing nature. We even picked special Lapland berries in the woods while it was snowing and learned how to make Sami jam. It was tart and delicious!
