Today, most Bedouin have a house in a town, but also keep tents in the desert. Many of them also still have camels or other livestock.
The camel stores water inside of its hump on its back, so it can go weeks without needing more water. It is like they are carrying around a big water jug on their backs all the time. This makes the camel a perfect animal for living in a desert where water can be hard to find. Camels also have really long and thick eyelashes that protect them from getting sand in their eyes.
Arabian camels are kept as livestock and are not in danger of dying out right now. Many of them live very nice lifestyles under the care of their owners, but others may be abused. When I was at the pyramids in Egypt, I saw some camels that were abused and I refused to ride them. Usually, though, camels seem pretty well maintained.
