Did you know South Korea used to be one of the world's poorest countries? After the Korean War, the country experienced devastating poverty. However, after help from foreign aid, Korea went through a period of industrial development where the country transformed itself from a poor and war-torn country to one of the wealthiest countries in the world!
Seoul is a city that has a population of 10 million people. 3.6 million live in the whole state of Connecticut. The population of Seoul is around 3 times the population of Connecticut. That's a lot of people isn't it. New York City, the biggest city in the US, has a population of 8.48 million, about 1.5 million less than Seoul. You would think that New York would have a bigger population than Seoul because of how big the United States is right? Well, it's actually the opposite. South Korea is a small country. It's about the size of the state of Indiana. So, everyone commutes to the big city. While in the US, we have many major cities spread all around like Dallas, Chicago, LA, Baltimore, Miami, Ocean City, and Seattle, just to name some. South Korea only has 2 major cities: Seoul and Busan. More than 50% of Korea's population lives in Seoul. With that many people living in one place, it creates a very unique environment.
