As a refugee, it can be hard to adjust to a new life. For example, many young South Koreans already know English, and often, a grasp of English is a requirement to get into college and get a job. Refugees are at a disadvantage since they may only know Korean and might not be used to a more modern lifestyle.
One of my tutees is studying to become a doctor. One day, he would like to apply to become a doctor in the United States. He has to know English well in order to achieve his dream. However, knowing English would also be helpful in Korea as he sees patients from around the world who can speak English but not Korean.
Through the organization, a group of students from my school program tutor refugees at least twice per month. I've seen a lot of improvement from my two tutees. At first, I was a bit hesitant in taking the position. Personally, I believe trained local English teachers should be hired. However, since this was a volunteer organization that needed my help, I decided to take part and volunteer.
The people I tutor are very funny and kind. I usually incorporate music and videos in my lessons. Last week, I went over the summary of the Pixar shorts "Bao" and "Piper" then played the videos to teach new vocabulary words. They really enjoyed it! I hope that the tutees continue to learn English and study hard to achieve their dreams someday!
