Walk to Work with Me!

Introduction:

Every morning I get up and I walk to work, which is so weird to me. Back in the United States, even when I worked relatively close to home, it was almost expected that I would drive. But here, so many more people are out and about, walking around. The streets are more pedestrian-friendly and cars even stop at crosswalks (that never happens in LaGrange)!

How do people get around?:

Just because I walk most places doesn't mean that it's the only way to get around. People drive here, on the right side of the road just like in the US. It's also fairly common for people to take the commuter rail, the cercanías, if they work or go to school in Madrid. Of course, there's always buses going around the whole community of Madrid , as well.

Most people, especially young people, will use their tarjeta transporte público (public transportation card) to get around, which lets you use the Madrid bus, cercanias, and metro lines all for a flat fee. I have one that I use when I want to explore the big city, or if I want to go on bigger adventures to places around the community.

How did I feel when I tried this way of getting around?:

Honestly, I love walking--it makes me feel really ready for my day to have a nice long walk to work in the morning (almost 40 minutes each way!).
