What an incredible journey we have had taking part in the Weddell Sea Expedition 2019 together! There have been photos of penguins and videos of the S.A. Agulhas II breaking ice, as well as exciting video conferences. With the help of Holly’s articles and each of these incredible experiences, one of the most remote places in the world, Antarctica, has come to life. After being a part of this expedition, online, would you like to go to Antarctica or be part of an expedition, yourself, someday? I know I would!
When I was in fourth grade in New Hampshire, my classmates and I learned to waddle across a field to a hill and then pop onto our bellies to “toboggan” down, just like penguins. That was one of many experiences that shaped my love of animals and conservation and inspired me to become an educator. I hope that you have each taken something away from this experience that you will keep forever--something that has inspired you, just like when I learned to be a penguin all those years ago!
During the expedition, the AUV and ROV team really inspired me! I find it so fascinating that they program and pilot the vehicles and are the first to see the data being collected. Even today, in 2019, there are so many mysteries in our oceans that are waiting to be explored.
