February 11 was International Women and Girls in Science Day, and I am humbled to tell you all that myself and 16 others are the first women to ever explore this part of the Weddell Sea. In 1915, when Shackleton and his men became trapped here, women would never have been able to come on a polar expedition. Today, the women before us have paved a path of opportunity for those following in their footsteps. We have so many extremely experienced and inspiring women aboard the S.A. Agulhas II. Let’s meet them!

Holly Ewart (that's me!) works for Ocean Infinity as a project manager. My role in the Weddell Sea Expedition 2019 is to help coordinate and oversee the logistics, outreach and educational content.

Dr. Christine Batchelor is a postdoctoral student conducting research in both the Arctic and Antarctica. She uses a variety of marine geophysical and geological data to reconstruct the configuration and dynamics of former ice sheets.

Evelyn Dowdeswell is a glacial geologist and research associate at the Scott Polar Research Institute at the University of Cambridge.
