There has been light snowfall most of this week, and it has been partly cloudy most days. Currently, as I look out of my window, Antarctica has become covered in fog and I cannot see further than 20 feet!
I have seen three minke whales this week! They came within 60 feet of the S.A. Agulhas II. I have also seen more Weddell seals and emperor penguins. Did you know that the emperor penguin is the tallest and heaviest of all the penguins? How tall do you think an emperor penguin is?
I saw an emperor penguin come very close to the S. A. Agulhas II while we were ice-breaking. At first, I was nervous about the penguin getting hit by the vessel, but the penguin was very agile and quickly jumped into the water. These birds are very curious, so they do tend to come close to the ship.
