A Welcome to Country

Introduction:

Aboriginals are the Indigenous people of Australia. Similar to the US, Australia was a British colony that pushed out the native peoples and treated them poorly. However, in recent years, the Australian culture has been trying to improve their relationship with the Aboriginal Australians through fostering an environment of respect, inclusivity and cultural sensitivity between the Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities.

What tradition did I learn about?:

A tradition that I learned about here is a "Welcome to Country" ceremony. This is an Aboriginal Australian tradition where those of the community (typically an elder) will welcome visitors to their land. Melbourne and my university, La Trobe, is home to the Indigenous Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung tribe.

Why does the community have this tradition?:

This tradition exists to recognize and show respect for Aboriginal Australian culture, as well as their connections and history to the land. It often involves a formal ceremony or speech to make visitors aware of the importance of the land to the Indigenous peoples.

Is this tradition connected to its environment? How?:

This tradition is connected to its environment as it addresses the Aboriginal's past, present and ongoing connection and care to the land.
