I rode inside a small, circular basket that carries four people and is lifted on a rope by the crane. It does initially swing a bit, but once we were about five meters (15 feet) off the ship deck the basket became very stable and we were treated to a full 360-degree view of Antarctica. It is one of the coolest ways I have ever traveled from place to place!
Antarctica is a very pristine environment and we are all very mindful to protect the environment here. All personnel that come to Antarctica have in-depth safety and environmental briefings, and all of the ship's crew operate in environmentally-friendly ways. The crane does not emit any toxins into our atmosphere. We are hoping to help make Antarctica a marine-protected area where all visitors maintain high standards of environmental efficiency and care.
