My name is Yasmine and I’m excited to share my journey to Nepal! I was born in College Station, Texas and moved to Memphis, Tennessee when I was nine years old. My family is made up of my mom, my dad, my older sister and my cat. Both my parents are immigrants from Uzbekistan a country in Central Asia, so we frequently visit Uzbekistan to see our relatives.

I go to Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee. Though I’m close to home, I live on campus. I’m majoring in Biology because I love studying living things and hope to do research that helps people adapt to climate change. My favorite topic to study is plants, which is an interest that started in high school. I used to volunteer at the Memphis Botanic Garden and continued volunteering during summer break. Then, last year, I spent part of my summer break in Alaska gardening and learning about Alaskan plants.

I’m most interested in the plants we eat and how agriculture is changing around the world. Because of this, I chose SIT Nepal: Development, Gender, and Social Change as my spring semester study abroad program. I hope to study the different crops Nepali farmers grow and the context in which they grow.
