The Wellington Cable Car was built when the city was quickly expanding and trying to find a way to navigate the hilly environment. It provided a more accessible route for people to get around the community. In 2016, the Cable Car underwent a major equipment upgrade to replace the electric drive and control system. Since the 1979 upgrade, each car has completed more than one million trips.
