Geographically, the area is fairly small but it is surrounded by dramatic bush-clad hills, homes nestled on the steep streets and the majestic deepwater harbour. There is a sense of welcome in the community. Kiwis are extremely positive and friendly, and they definitely take advantage of the hiking paths, local beaches and hidden bush trails. All combined, these features create a truly winning combination for a nice neighborhood in which to live.
There are challenges in living here due to the hilly land, strong winds and coastal waves. The hilly land makes it hard for residents to walk around neigborhoods without physical stress. A lot of walking paths or stairs are built to help people get to the top of the hill. These walking paths usually are longer distances than car roads. The strong winds and unpredictable weather sometimes make it difficult for locals to get around for work or school. The weather in Wellington can change quickly from having sun in the morning to strong winds and rain in the afternoon, followed by a quiet night sky... all in one day. The city's location by the coast causes flooding hazards. At times, the waves can get violent and flood nearby houses and shops, jepordizing people's safety.
Many houses are built up along a hillside because of the city's unique landscape. Home owners also found a way to adapt this environment by installing dual rail cable cars. This carriage system allows residents to travel easily from the road to their home on the hill; it is almost like an outdoor elevator.
