Fire, Tomatoes, Oh my!

Introduction:

Spain has so many tradtions, and I learned about many while I was there. I was pretty surprised to learn that so many traditions are tied to Christianity. One tradition that I didn't get to experience, sadly, was the siesta, or afternoon nap. As a metropolis, Madrid no longer has a siesta. However, certain towns still observe this old tradition.

What tradition did I learn about?:

I first learned about La Tomatina on Univision, a Spanish T.V. network, when I was about eight years old. Since then I've always wanted to experience it. La Tomatina is a yearly event that takes place on the last Wednesday of August where people just throw tomatoes at each other! Another tradition in which I wanted to partake before I left was The Fallas de Valencia. This is a five day party where townspeople have enormous intricate giant wooden figures called ninots in a parade.  At the end of the parade, they burn them all. I'll have to save that one for a different journey to Spain.

Why does the community have this tradition?:

When it comes to La Tomatina, nobody really knows how it began or why. A theory is that it started in 1944 after angry constituents threw tomatoes at their council members.
