Since I really loved travelling, and I wanted to improve my Chinese skills after graduation, I knew I would look for a position after graduation that would let me do all of these things. One of my advisors mentioned a program called Fulbright that offers a scholarships to teach English abroad in many different countries. I chose to apply for the English teaching position in Taiwan so that I could go to a place I’ve never been and practice speaking Chinese. I was so excited when I found out I had gotten the scholarship to go to Taiwan, and I'm even more excited to be here now!
In Taiwan, I live in a little town called Guan Shan about 45 minutes outside the city of Taitung on the southeastern coast. The town is surrounded by mountains and rice fields, and it is definitely one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen. I teach English to third, fourth, fifth and sixth graders at two different elementary schools called Rui Feng and Luan Shan. The classes are pretty small, but we have a lot of fun playing games, learning how to write and practicing new phrases in English. Whenever I’m not teaching, I’m either taking Chinese classes, going for a run around Guan Shan, or travelling around Taiwan. Since you can get anywhere in Taiwan in only a few hours or less, it’s really easy to get around! I hope to see as much of Taiwan as I can over this next year.
I can’t wait for you all to share this journey with me!
