Can you guess what it is? You can drink it, cook with it and use it as an ingredient for breakfast, lunch, dinner and even dessert! Known as kiselo mlyako (кисело мляко in Cyrillic), Bulgarian yogurt holds a special place in many traditional foods.
What makes it so unique? Bulgarian yogurt is not like any other yogurt in the world! Thanks to Bulgaria’s unique environment, it contains a remarkable ingredient: Lactobacillus bulgaricus (try saying that three times fast!). This special strain not only gives the yogurt its distinct flavor, but it also offers impressive health benefits.
One of the most popular Bulgarian dishes made with Bulgarian yogurt is called banitsa.
The food I tried was banitsa, and I usually grab it from a local bakery, called Buena, on my way to school! I have also tried making it at home! It is such a delicious way to start the morning, with a slice costing 3.50 Bulgarian leva (about $1.86 USD).
