Life as a Korean High School Student

Introduction:

Sang Hyun is a high school student from South Korea. He is one of the students to whom I teach English!

What do you eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner?:

“My high school is a boarding school, so we live and sleep at the school. I like to sleep in, so I don’t eat breakfast. However, the school's daily breakfast includes rice, soup, kimchi and different banchan, or side dishes. At lunch today, I had Korean pork slices with gochujang sauce, rice, kimchi and soup. Dinner is similar to lunch. Today, we had pork slices, rice, soup, kimchi and noodles for dinner.”

What is your house like?:

“I don’t live in a house. I live in an apartment. In Korea, most people live in apartments.”

What chores do you have at home?:

“At home, I am in charge of the recycling. Sometimes I help with the laundry and the dishes.”

What jobs do your parents have?:

“My mom is a stay-at-home mom. My dad is an architect, and he designs buildings.”

What time does school start, and what time do you go home?:

“School starts at 8:20 a.m. every day. We don’t go home because our school is a boarding school, so we live at the school. On some weekends, we can go back home.”
