My name is Alondra Cobian, and I’m 22 years old. I grew up in Southern California in a city called Montclair, about an hour away from Los Angeles. I’ve lived on the West Coast my entire life, so I’m super excited to learn about New York and life on the East Coast from all of you! I attended college in California at Scripps College, which is only about ten minutes from my hometown. At Scripps, I majored in Environment, Economics, and Politics, a very interdisciplinary program that connected a variety of topics. For example, I learned how the design of cities can impact people’s health, and I even took a class about how our global climate has changed over hundreds of years!
Toward the end of my four years at Scripps, I knew I wanted to experience living and learning abroad. I was ready to explore the world by trying new foods, meeting different people, and visiting new places. Just as you learn about math, history, and science in school, traveling can teach you so much about those subjects—and many others! So, I applied for the Fulbright Program, which is a scholarship that allows you to teach, research, or study in another country for an extended period of time.
