I was incredibly fortunate to be selected as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant in Mexico.
I chose Mexico because my family is from Jalisco, and I wanted to learn more about my roots—my family, my culture, and my history by living here. My parents are immigrants from Mexico, so Spanish was actually my first language, and I grew up surrounded by Mexican food and traditions. However, I’ve never lived in Mexico (or anywhere outside of California), so this experience is completely new and exciting.
I’m currently living in a rural area called Atlacomulco, in the State of Mexico, where I’ve been teaching English to elementary school students for a little over a month. I had never visited this part of Mexico before, so it’s been really fun getting to know the people, trying the food (my favorite so far is elotes), and exploring the surrounding areas. While I’m here, I hope to keep learning about Mexico as a whole, and I’m confident that this experience will help me prepare for my future goals. I hope to become an environmental policymaker—at least, that’s the plan right now, though I’m still learning and exploring. I also hope this experience inspires me to continue traveling and staying curious about the world. I’m so excited to keep sharing my journey in Mexico with all of you. I can’t wait to learn more about you and be explorers together!
