As aforementioned, many Latin countries have a strong affiliation with Catholicism,, and it is an important time of the year to commemorate thesion, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Latin America has many ways of celebrating these events and each has their own twist or ritual unique to their culture.
It is connected to the environment in the sense that geography can sometimes play a big role in how they celebrate these events. For example, the climb of Monserrate is a challenging hike that is over 3000 metres (~10,000 ft) tall and above sea level. Hiking it, let alone doing it on your hands and knees, can be an excruciating experience. In Guatemala, the processions are known for the colourful carpets made of sawdust, fruit, flowers, and pine needles, which are extracted from the environment. These carpets are meant for the paraders to walk over while the processions take place.
