Meet My Favorite Costa Rican Creatures

Where does it live?:

Frogs live all over Costa Rica. There are some species that only live near the beach, soaking up the sun and the humidity. Other frogs live higher up, in the rainforests, bathing in the constant rain and puddles. Some frogs are super picky, and can only be found in one tiny little patch of forest in the country. Others have gotten used to humans and can be found near houses and in peoples' gardens. They are always found near water, whether that be a lake, river, or road-side puddle.  Aside from Costa Rica, frogs live on every continent except Antartica!

How does it use its environment to survive?:

Frogs, especially in Costa Rica, depend directly on water to survive. They start their lives in water as eggs, which grow into little swimming tadpoles, then finally grow legs and can move around on land. They need moisture all their lives to keep their skin moist--that is actually how they breathe! Not only do they need water, but they also need plenty of trees and greenery to hide in, and insects to eat. Frogs rely on the forest they're used to staying intact. If people come in and take away trees to build houses and roads, the frogs try to live there too, only to get smooshed trying to cross the street!

What can harm this creature or plant? Are we worried about it?:

Frogs are special little creatures that are in danger right now all around the world, for the same reason. One type of fungus, like a mushroom, makes frogs very sick. This fungus can cause lots of frogs to die very quickly before people even realize what is happening.

Another threat to frogs has to do with farming.
